Making a living as an artist can be difficult at times. Those times can mean struggling a bit financially before an artist’s career takes off. But there is help for any artist trying to get over that hump. The solution is applying for and securing grants.

These awards are great for any visual artist pursuing their craft and looking for some extra help. So, here are 10 artist grants every artist should apply for before their deadline is up.

The Harpo Foundation: Grants for Visual Artists

– Due  date: April 4, 2021

These artist grants provide up to $10,000 to any underrepresented visual artist over the age of 21. They offer flexibility as the artist can work in any medium for professional development or specific projects.

The Awesome Foundation: Awesome Grant

– Due date: monthly rolling basis

Local chapters of Awesome Foundation award monthly $1,000 grants to artists chosen by private individuals. The criteria for the awards vary depending on the chapter. The grants are centered around projects dealing with initiatives such as the arts, technology, community development and more.

Ruth & Harold Chenven Foundation: Individual Artist Grants

– Due date: July 15, 2021

The foundation provides a series of $1,500 individualized grants to U.S.-based artists. These artists must be involved in a new craft or visual arts project.

HopperPrize.org: The Hopper Prize

– Due date: May 18, 2021

These awards are given to any artist over 18 years old working in any discipline at any experience level. The grants are given to six artists with two receiving $3,500 and four receiving $1,000.

Artist Grant.org: Artist Grant

– Due date: April 15, July 15 or October 15, 2021

The award is given out four times a year to visual artists working in any medium. The first-place recipient receives $500 with the first and second runners up receiving $100 apiece.

Artadia: Artadia Awards

– Due date: Varies depending on the city

Artadia has partnered with six metropolitan cities – Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Houston – to give out grants to local artists. Each recipient can be awarded up to $10,000.

Center: Project Development Grant

– Due date: April 20, 2021

This artist grant aids photographers, videographers and directors to finish fine art or documentary projects that haven’t received wide distribution or publishing. It consists of a $5,000 award along with professional feedback and development opportunities.

The Pollock-Krasner Foundation: Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant

– Due date: rolling basis

This award aids visual artists working in paint, paper or printmaking who demonstrate a financial need. Each recipient must have worked professionally for a significant period. They can get up to $30,000 depending on their circumstances.

The Haven Foundation: Interim Financial Assistance

– Due date: rolling basis

Through this award, the foundation offers emergency funds to working artists based on need.  Recipients must have experienced an unforeseen emergency or triggering event that impacted their work.

Foundation for Contemporary Arts: Emergency Grants

– Due date: rolling basis

These artist grants are for visual artists who need financial support to produce or exhibit their work. The emergency funding can range from $500 to $2,500 depending on the artist’s needs.
